![]() ![]() Everything else is sheer utopianism in the pejorative sense – naïve dreaming of what can never be.Ī phrase that has almost become a cliché, capitalist realism points to a failure of imagination, suggesting that it is now easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. The term implies that, ever since the fall of Soviet Communism in 1989, capitalism has been the only game in town the only realistic system of production and distribution to structure globalised human society. ‘Capitalist realism’ is a term popularised by the late political theorist Mark Fisher in a provocative and unsettling book by that name (Fisher, 2009).
